Akwa Ibom Governor gifts luxury SUVs to all former deputy governors amid ₦6 billion vehicle budget

The Akwa Ibom state Governor, Umo Eno, has presented brand new luxury SUVs to all former deputy governors of the state.

The gesture, aimed at recognising their contributions, comes amid a broader ₦6 billion allocation for the purchase of government vehicles in 2025.

Governor explains purpose of gifts

Governor Eno, in a post on his official X handle, said the SUVs were meant to appreciate the service of former deputy governors.

I presented brand new Land Cruisers to all former Deputy Governors of Akwa Ibom State as a token of appreciation for their years of service and sacrifice,” he wrote.

He added that the former deputies’ dedication had helped shape the state’s progress and deserved recognition through comfort and convenience.

The governor did not provide details on how individual vehicles were allocated or whether additional support would accompany the gifts.

The presentation forms part of the state’s wider vehicle acquisition plan for political and administrative officials.

State budget allocations for luxury vehicle purchases

Records show that the Office of the Secretary to the State Government budgeted ₦3 billion in 2025 for 30 SUVs.

Between January and September 2024, ₦1.6 billion was spent on similar purchases. Additionally, the state allocated ₦3 billion for 70 saloon cars, while ₦3.6 billion was spent on these vehicles in the same period.

The total ₦6 billion allocation this year covers SUVs, saloon cars, and other luxury vehicles for government use.

The expenditure highlights the scale of resources dedicated to official transport amidst ongoing discussions about fiscal prudence and efficient governance.

Luxury vehicle purchases amid calls for prudence

The SUV presentation comes as the state continues to manage public resources carefully.

Observers note that while appreciating former officials is customary, it coincides with growing scrutiny of government spending priorities.

Governor Eno’s office has not clarified whether similar allocations will continue for other political appointees, leaving questions about long-term vehicle procurement policies.
