The Airtel Africa Foundation, in partnership with UNICEF, has unveiled plans to positively impact over 10 million lives across Africa by 2030 through programmes in education, digital inclusion, environmental sustainability, and financial literacy. The foundation was formally launched at a press conference in Lagos on Tuesday.
In his opening remarks, Airtel Nigeria CEO Dinesh Balsingh emphasized the foundation’s commitment to transforming Africa’s socio-economic landscape. “We present the Airtel Africa Foundation to the world. This foundation amplifies our social investment with a sharper focus, stronger platform, and a groundbreaking vision. These initiatives are already visible in classrooms, hospitals, rural communities, and cities, where digital access defines opportunities,” he said.
Balsingh explained that the foundation equips schools with digital devices, internet connectivity, and teacher training to prepare young Africans for self-reliance in the digital economy.
Airtel Africa CEO Sunil Taldar noted that the initiative is both a business imperative and a guiding philosophy. “We have visited over 1,200 schools, impacted more than one million students, and trained 17,000 teachers in digital education across our 14 markets. A significant portion of the foundation’s investment will focus on Nigeria,” he said.
Since its inception in July 2024, the foundation has been active in Nigeria and 13 other African countries, bridging the digital divide, equipping youth with 21st-century skills, and promoting economic resilience.
Foundation Chairman Dr. Segun Ogunsanya described the initiative as a catalyst for change. “What makes you rich is not what you have, but what you give,” he said. He highlighted programmes including zero-rated educational platforms, device donations, and school refurbishments. So far, six schools have been reconstructed in Nigeria, with a target of ten to ensure geographic balance.
Ogunsanya also announced the Airtel Africa Fellowship, offering full undergraduate scholarships in technology and STEM fields, mentorship, internships, and exchange programmes to develop Africa’s next generation of innovators. “Currently, we are sponsoring two Nigerian students in India, and we plan to award 100 additional scholarships to Nigerians,” he revealed.
He added that Airtel employees play a key role, with over 1,100 staff volunteering their expertise in mentorship, coaching, and community projects across the continent.
