The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised governors who have recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying their moves reflect personal convenience rather than political conviction.
ADC accuses defecting Governors of lacking conviction
Speaking on Arise TV on Friday, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi argued that true leadership requires courage and belief in the nation.
“These governors are not joining APC because they are convinced about anything. They are pandering to vulnerabilities or looking for an easy way out,” Abdullahi said.
He added that the ADC is unconcerned with these defections, insisting the ruling party is systematically undermining opposition to create a false sense of inevitability around the 2027 elections.
Ruling party warned of threat to Nigerian democracy ahead of 2027 elections
The remarks come amid high-profile defections across Nigeria.
Governors such as Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), Peter Mbah (Enugu), Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers), and Douye Diri (Bayelsa) have all switched from the PDP to APC this year, reshaping the country’s political landscape.
Abdullahi also accused the APC of weakening other opposition parties, including the PDP and Labour Party, using legal and political tactics that risk steering Nigeria toward a one-party state.
He emphasised ADC’s growth, noting that the party has established headquarters in 28 states within five months despite having no officeholders.
“The APC represents the greatest threat to Nigerian democracy,” he concluded, stressing that Nigerians deserve genuine choice and competition in the upcoming elections.
