Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist Femi Falana has condemned the decision to name a street in Lagos after a former governor accused of corruption and murder.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with TheLagacySeries, Falana revealed he has issued a direct ultimatum to the local government chairman. He demanded the immediate removal of the name, warning that failure to comply would result in legal action.
The senior advocate detailed the grave allegations against the former governor.
According to Falana, the individual presided over a notorious killer squad responsible for the deaths of at least three people. He noted that the governor was previously put on trial over the matter.
Falana also accused the former governor of looting nearly N7 billion from state funds.
He stated the money was originally earmarked for the procurement of arms and ammunition to combat terrorism. Although the governor was charged in court, he was eventually discharged.
The activist framed the street naming as a profound act of impunity, arguing it sends a dangerous message to young Nigerians.
He questioned the morality of honoring a person he described as a murderer and a corrupt figure with a public monument.
He asserted that citizens possess the right to challenge such monstrosity, warning that glorifying individuals with such records undermines the nation’s moral fabric.
His words: “A street has just been named after a former governor in my area of Lagos, and I have called the chairman of the local government that he has to change that name, and if it doesn’t change, we are going to court. Because the man, apart from being associated with corrupt practices, also, when he was governor, set up a killer squad that killed at least three people that I know. We put him on trial. Now you name a street after him. What are you telling young people? That a murderer can be honored as a leader in society? A man who stole close to 7 billion naira from money meant to procure arms and ammunition to fight terrorists, who was charged but freed by a court—technically, you now say this is the hero in society, and a street should be named after him? No. We have the right to challenge such monstrosity because you are destroying our national morality.”
