70-year-old woman gives birth to twins after years of barrenness

A 70-year-old Ugandan Safina Namukwaya, has welcomed a set of twins, making her the oldest woman in Africa to give birth.

In what is described as a medical miracle, doctors said on Thursday that both mother and children, a boy and girl, are healthy.

She delivered the babies through cesarean section on Wednesday at a medical facility in the Ugandan capital of Kampala, where she had received fertility treatment.

According to local media, Safina conceived through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) at the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre in Kampala.

In a statement on Thursday, the hospital said; “Celebrating our 20th anniversary, we’ve achieved the extraordinary – delivering twins to Africa’s oldest mother aged 70!. This story isn’t just about medical success; it’s about the strength and resilience of the human spirit.”

Namukwaya told Uganda’s NTV that this was her second delivery in three years, following the birth of a girl in 2020, when she was 67.

The mother recounted how she experienced difficulties during the pregnancy, including being abandoned by the children’s father.

She claimed that men are afraid of fathering twins and that her husband never showed up at the hospital where she was admitted.

Namukwaya’s first husband passed away in 1992 before entering into another relationship four years later. The Septuagenarian is said to have miscarried during her first marriage.
