Former Kano State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has dismissed the significance of the APC’s large number of state governors ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking at a town hall meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Kwankwaso argued that having more than 30 governors on the APC platform does not guarantee President Bola Tinubu victory.
He cited the defeat of former President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 presidential election despite being the incumbent, saying the development demonstrated that sitting presidents and their political parties can lose elections.
Kwankwaso also criticised the performance of APC governors, alleging that many had performed poorly and would struggle to campaign for the party ahead of 2027.
> “Jonathan was the sitting president, and he lost the election. Those who think that because they have more than 30 governors, they cannot lose are making a very big mistake.”
He maintained that electoral victory would ultimately depend on the performance of the government and the decision of voters, rather than simply the number of governors supporting a presidential candidate.
His comments come amid intensifying political realignments and opposition efforts to challenge the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
