Senator Orji Uzor Kalu of Abia State has stirred widespread reactions on social media after declaring that he will live and campaign day and night for President Bola Tinubu to secure victory in Abia during the 2027 elections.
Kalu made the statement during an interview on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television.
Kalu confident Tinubu will win Abia in 2027
When asked by the programme’s anchor, Seun Okinbaloye, what gave him the confidence that President Tinubu would win in Abia for the first time, Kalu said his assurance came from the amount of work he had done in the state.
He emphasised that his confidence was drawn from his interactions with citizens, which, according to him, showed their growing support for Tinubu.
Okinbaloye further asked if he could recall the number of votes Tinubu received across the South-East in the 2023 elections. In response, Kalu said the figures from 2023 were immaterial, stressing that he was now working hard to ensure Tinubu’s victory in 2027.
The senator admitted that he did not give his full effort to Tinubu’s campaign in the last election, saying he only moved to Abia for three weeks before the polls.
“In 2027, I will live in Abia for five months, campaign day and night to ensure President Tinubu wins in Abia State,” he declared.
Mixed reactions trail Kalu’s comment on social media
Kalu’s statement has triggered intense debate on X (formerly Twitter), with Nigerians expressing diverse opinions.
A user named Sacred wrote: “Shame no catch u say u no even Dey live there … if Abia people have sense they should come together and make sure this man don’t even spend up to 1hr there .. after the shege they went try, u wan go reap where u no sow.”
El Principe commented: “The conditions you left Abia, where you able to live in it for 5 months. Now you have roads to drive on, and suddenly, you’ll live to campaign all your life by God’s grace.”
Ejims Kings added: “These politicians know Nigeria better and talk with substance. Money trading answers calls in our political space.
“APC is formidable in Abia North, and Orji Uzor Kalu knows that more money will get more votes. There was hope in 2023 election, but 2027 will take us backward.”
Critics question Tinubu’s record and popularity
Mezie strongly criticised Kalu’s stance, describing Tinubu’s government as a failed one.
“As of today in Nigeria, Tinubu’s government represents the image of a failed government. Nigerians are suffering more than ever before under Tinubu. Tinubu isn’t an example of a leader worthy of emulation.
“Under the bridge of Tinubu’s nose, over 200 Nigerians were massacred in one night in Benue State, and till date, no one has been arrested for that near genocidal killings.
“So, what exactly is interesting about Tinubu that Orji Kalu will be telling Abia people that will make a sensible Abia person vote for Tinubu in 2027?
“As of today in Abia, Tinubu doesn’t even enjoy up to 5% goodwill in. In fact, there are places in all the zones of Nigeria that you dare not mention Tinubu’s name and not leave with bruises.
“Tinubu doesn’t have ordinary chicken shed project, constructed by his government anywhere around Abia. Tinubu is adjudged the worse President in the history of Nigeria, and this is an unadulterated truth that even you reading this piece knows.”
