Political realignments ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections are gaining momentum, as reports indicate that Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi State, and Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo State, may soon leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to a report by Daily Post Nigeria on Monday, March 9, 2026, sources revealed that Bala Mohammed is considering a move to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), while Makinde is reportedly weighing a switch to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The reported plans come amid deepening leadership disputes and internal crises within the PDP, which have triggered a wave of defections from the party since the 2023 general elections.
Several governors have already exited the PDP within the past year; Among them are Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, who defected to the APC in April 2025, and Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State, who joined the ruling party in June 2025; Others include Peter Mbah of Enugu State (October 2025), Douye Diri of Bayelsa State (November 2025), and Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State (December 2025), all of whom moved to the APC.
In January 2026, three more governors, Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State, Agbu Kefas of Taraba State, and Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, also reportedly switched to the APC; Meanwhile, Ademola Adeleke, governor of Osun State, defected to the Accord Party in December 2025.
The defections extend beyond state executives; Since June 2023, at least 66 federal lawmakers elected on the PDP platform, 19 senators and 47 members of the House of Representatives, have crossed over to the APC.
In addition, Dauda Lawal, governor of Zamfara State, has reportedly indicated plans to leave the PDP for the APC after the upcoming Eid al-Adha celebrations.
According to the election timetable released by INEC, presidential and National Assembly elections are slated for January 16, 2027, while governorship and state assembly elections will follow on February 6, 2027.See_More…
