Essentially, a legacy is something valuable, a goal or mission that a leader would like to remember long after they leave office.

While a leader’s legacy is meant to be a by-product of carefully considered historical decisions based on personal values, this is not always the case.

Nelson Mandela became almost a living political saint, not through a “solid” performance as South Africa’s president, but through the mere decision to forgive those who imprisoned him for 27 years (an act that initially enraged many black South Africans); Goodluck Jonathan became larger than life for conceding defeat to Buhari after losing the 2015 presidential election; and Obasanjo became a global statesman upon his first inauguration as military head of state simply because he handed power to elected civilians at a time when such an act was a rarity in Africa.

Political leaders sometimes venture into projects like building airports and universities in hopes of being remembered for such projects.
