It is important to note that the South-East has been historically marginalized in Nigerian politics, which has led to feelings of exclusion and underrepresentation. The region has also faced significant security challenges, particularly with the rise of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and clashes with security forces.

Despite these challenges, the South-East has contributed significantly to the development of Nigeria, particularly in the areas of commerce and industry. The region is home to several major cities, including Enugu, Aba, and Onitsha, which are known for their vibrant markets and entrepreneurial spirit.

During an interview with TVC, APC chieftain Ekenyem Nwafor-Orizu responded to claims that the South-East region of Nigeria did not contribute to the victory of President Bola Tinubu and therefore should not ask for the Senate Presidency of the 10th National Assembly. Nwafor-Orizu argued that the poor performance of the ruling party in the South-East should not be used as an excuse to deny the region the seat of Senate President.

In his own words:

“In 1999, the South-East voted for Obasanjo (PDP) so was the South-West punished when they didn’t vote for him? Obasanjo gave them some good ministerial portfolios and some good conditions and they came into the national fold. So you don’t say because we didn’t do this, you hammer us immediately. What have you given us before for the people to behave that way? Why don’t you give those of us who were stigmatized and harassed something so we can go back home and tell our brothers about it?”

Nwafor-Orizu also pointed out that the South-West did not vote for former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999, yet they were not punished. He explained that Obasanjo gave the South-West some good ministerial portfolios and conditions, which brought them into the national fold. Therefore, Nwafor-Orizu believes that the South-East should not be immediately punished for not voting for the ruling party.
