We want the Senate President because the vice president-elect is just a spare tyre- Northern group

A group, the Northern Consensus Movement has rejected the decision of the ruling APC to zone the Senate president of the 10th national assembly to the South-South. The group which demanded that the position be zoned to the North, rejected the position of Speaker which was zoned to the North by the APC. They also rejected the position of vice president-elect, adding that the position is just like a spare tyre.

Speaking to reporters, the president of the group, Awwal Abdullahi Aliyu said, “we are not looking at the position of Speaker, we are looking at the position of the Senate President. It is a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise the North that is why they zoned the position of Speaker to Kaduna.

The Senate President is the number three position in Nigeria by hierarchy of office. We want the position of number three because the vice president-elect is just a spare tyre. Unless the president assign a responsibility to him, he has no responsibility constitutionally. So that is just a spare tyre position. We don’t want a spare tyre position, we want a real position and that’s the position of the Senate President. The position of the Senate President is sacrosanct and it’s a position that we will not give away.

We don’t want the position of Speaker, they should zone the Speaker to whichever zone they want but we want the position of Senate President.”
