Telecommunications giant, MTN Nigeria, has tendered an apology to its subscribers following backlash over a sudden 200 per cent increase in the price of its 15GB weekly digital bundle.
The increase in tariff was a result of an approval granted by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in January.
The NCC had approved a 50 percent tariff increase for the telecommunications company in line with changes in the economic landscape under the current administration.
In line with the adjustments, MTN implemented new rates on its Pulse bundle, raising call charges to N13.8 per minute from N7.8 per minute — a 76.92 per cent increase. SMS rates also climbed from N4 to N6. According to checks, the call rate moved from 13k per second to 23k per second, translating to N13.8 per minute.
The company, in a message to its over 84 million subscribers on Wednesday, admitted fault and acknowledged the frustration caused by the abrupt price adjustment.
The message read: “We know how upsetting it must have been to suddenly wake up to a 200 per cent increase on your favourite digital bundle. We could share several reasons and provide explanations, but omo, all that one na story. We don cast. We get it and admit it. Let’s just say na mistake. In this love season, don’t stay angry with us. Please forgive and forget. You matter die and we will never stop showing you how much. Let’s continue our relationship. Thank you for your understanding.”
The statement sparked mixed reactions with some subscribers appreciating the acknowledgment while others criticised the telecom giant for the sudden spike without prior notice.
Meanwhile, in a bid to rebuild customer trust and highlight its commitment to social impact, MTN launched a new campaign tagged ‘Go Make a Difference (Go M.A.D.)’ in Abuja. The initiative, which brought together young changemakers, entrepreneurs, and creatives, aims to inspire Nigerians to take bold steps towards driving positive change in their communities.
Speaking at the Abuja activation event, Senior Manager, Sales and Trade Development North, MTN Nigeria, Ohwofasa Obazenu, said: “Go M.A.D. is a movement that empowers Nigerians to act. Whether in business, education or social impact, we want people to know that their bold steps can create a ripple effect of change.”
Despite the ongoing tariff adjustments, MTN maintains that it remains committed to supporting customers and fostering meaningful engagement through impactful initiatives.
However, many subscribers are calling for clearer communication and more transparent pricing structures moving forward.
The development marks a critical test for MTN, which holds 51.4 per cent of Nigeria’s telecommunications market as it seeks to navigate regulatory changes while retaining consumer loyalty in an increasingly competitive industry.
