Lagos Central Senator-elect, Hon. Wasiu Eshinlokun-Sanni has given reasons why the next Senate President must come from the South and should be a Christian.

Eshinlokun-Sanni, who gave the advice during an interview with correspondents covering the Lagos State House of Assembly in his office, Alausa, Ikeja, noted that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) would have to balance the choice of Muslim/Muslim ticket of the executive arm Government of the incoming administration.

The lawmaker, who is currently the Deputy Speaker of the House and represents Lagos Island Constituency 1 at the House of Assembly, reiterated that “For the 10th Assembly, I believe the party should play a prominent role. There are so many factors that must be considered. Whoever would be the Senate President must come from the South and must be a Christian. The noise about Muslim/Muslim tickets must be nipped in the bud.

It would be recalled that the Vice President-elect, Senator Kashim Shettima had disclosed that the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, picked Godswill Akpabio as his preferred candidate for the position of the senate president to avoid the “negative narrative of Islamisation”.

Shettima spoke on Friday during a meeting with some elected lawmakers including Tajudeen Abbas, whose ambition to be House Speaker has been endorsed by Tinubu and the ruling APC.

Shettima said Tinubu wants to prevent a situation where the President, Vice President, Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives would all be Muslims.

Jonathan urges IoD to promote good governance

Former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, has urged the Institute of Director to ensure integrity to address many of the challenges confronting governance in the country.

He spoke at the 40th-anniversary dinner of the Institute of Directors Nigeria in Lagos.

He said, “A culture of integrity is what is needed to address many of the challenges confronting governance in our country. When integrity is entrenched as a culture and a corporate lifestyle in many organisations, the problems associated with corruption, dishonesty, poor governance, and even election irregularities will be significantly addressed.

“We can indeed reimagine the fate of governance in our country through ethical and sound work culture. This must begin with respective leaders like you who serve as directors, senior business leaders, and entrepreneurs in different organisations.”

In his presentation at the event, he urged the directors to project IoD as the go-to organisation for integrity and exemplary leadership.

A place like IoD, given the reputation they had built, he noted, could serve as a policy institute where corporate and political leaders could visit to test their ideas for responsible leadership and good governance.

He said, “It can also serve as the place where leaders could go to headhunt for tested and trusted technocrats to occupy strategic national positions; those that would justly deploy their skill and experience in exemplary service to the nation. This is my hope for IoD Nigeria as you celebrate this milestone.”

Presidential polls: Court dismiss Atiku, Obi’s request for live coverage

Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) has dismissed applications by Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi for live broadcast of proceedings for lacking in merit.

In a unanimous ruling, the court described the application by the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) as novel and with no utilitarian value.

Chairman of PEPC, Justice Haruna Tsammani, who delivered the lead ruling, said the reliefs sought were outside the substance of the petitions and equally outside the jurisdiction and competence of the election tribunal as the issue raised touches on policy formation.

The judge also held that it cannot permit a situation that would lead to the dramatisation of its proceedings.

“Allowing cameras is a major judicial policy which must be provided by rules of court, there is non yet. Avoidance of trial by ordeal of camera is better,” he said.

Tsammani who cited section 36 of the 1999 Constitution held that fair hearing of court proceedings “does not amount to conducting court sittings on television or in a stadium. The request (for a live broadcast of the court proceedings) has no utilitarian value. Live broadcast of court proceedings has no provisions in our statutory books. There is nowhere in the constitution and Electoral Act for televising court sittings.”
