Tiwa Savage hasn’t left us any room to forget her since she dropped her stellar EP, Sugarcane. After releasing videos for tracks off the project, and killing every feature she’s been on, she released a new song, “Tiwa’s Vibe”, and barely a week later she’s returned with another one, “Labalaba“.
When she released “Tiwa’s Vibe”, we said that she’s paid her dues and she’s clearly just making music as a form of artistic expression. She brings that same energy on this new track and her carefree aura is even clearer this time around
“Labalaba”, which means “butterfly” in Yoruba, could be Tiwa’s way of expressing that she has blossomed and left the awkward caterpillar phase behind. On the track, she samples Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing”, brazenly expressing a thirst for sex — something that Nigerian women are typically berated for.
She sings “No hustle, me dey give green light” and “Baby you are sweeter, I wanna have you every day”, which is a very clear middle finger to any societal constraints that seek to stop her from living her best life! Tiwa Savage is on a full care-free black girl vibe and we’re all the way here for it.
