Chief Martins Onovo, a prominent figure in the petroleum industry and a political activist, was the presidential candidate for the National Conscience Party (NCP) in the 2015 elections. Currently, he serves as the Head of Policy Positions for the Movement for Fundamental Change (MFC). In a recent interview with EJIKEME OMENAZU, Chief Onovo discussed several critical issues, including the need to revisit laws to ensure election disputes are resolved promptly.

During the interview, Chief Onovo expressed his concern about the current state of election disputes in Nigeria. He emphasized the need for the laws to be revisited to ensure that these disputes are resolved first. This would help to avoid the prolonged and often violent election disputes that have plagued the country in the past.

Chief Onovo also discussed Bola Tinubu’s plan to form a Government of National Unity with Rabiu Kwankwaso. He expressed his reservations about the plan, stating that it could lead to a concentration of power in the hands of a few individuals and ultimately undermine democracy in Nigeria.

According to him:

“It is necessary to conclude electoral disputes before inauguration. The principles of law require that we preserve the “res” for any matter in court. Also, the Justice Uwais Electoral Reform Panel recommended same. Therefore, we can review the existing laws to state it categorically as it is presently just implied. Section 135 of our Nigerian Constitution is clear that the incumbent remains in office until his successor is sworn-in. So, Gen. Buhari must remain in office until the case is concluded in court. If Gen. Buhari is unwilling to remain in office, then Prof. Osinbajo can act till the case is concluded. Otherwise, the Chief Justice of Nigeria can act.”

In conclusion, Chief Martins Onovo’s interview with EJIKEME OMENAZU covered several crucial issues affecting Nigeria. He emphasized the need for prompt resolution of election disputes, expressed his concerns about the proposed Government of National Unity and highlighted the potential benefits of the Dangote Refinery for Nigeria.
