Somotex Nigeria Limited has launched a new production line in Lagos to manufacture air conditioners that use R-32 refrigerant, a climate-friendly alternative to traditional cooling gases.
The move, backed by the Federal Ministry of Environment and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), marks a significant step in Nigeria’s push to meet its emissions reduction targets under the Montreal Protocol.
This air conditioning line is part of Somotex’s plan of investing in innovative and eco-friendly technologies.
“This commissioning is part of Mohinani Group’s broader vision to become a leader in sustainability. From this climate-friendly air conditioner line to our ongoing R-PET recycling initiative, we are committed to driving environmental progress through industrial innovation and long-term investment,” said Anil Mohinani, managing director of Somotex.
Speaking at the commissioning, Yunri Zhou, industrial development officer at UNIDO, said it is “a vital step toward meeting Nigeria’s commitment under the Montreal Protocol to reduce HCFC consumption by 67.5% by 2025.” He praised the R-32 air conditioner line, calling it “a model of how industry and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.”
Also at the commissioning was Idris Abdullahi, representing the Minister of Environment. He emphasized the ministry’s commitment to the Montreal Protocol, saying, “my Ministry, as Designated National Authority for the implementation of the protocol has continued to ensure that Nigeria fulfill its binding commitment under the Protocol, through the completion of activities that have led to the reduction in the consumption of Ozone Depleting Substances in the relevant sectors such as Refrigeration, Air Conditioning, Foam and others.”
He said the ministry has reached the set targets for Nigeria under the MP by phasing out Chloroflourocarbons, Carbon Tetrachloride, and some other ozone-depleting substances in 2010. 10%, 35%, and 51.35% reduction in HCFCs consumption were also achieved in 2015, 2020, and 2023, respectively.
Nigeria is experiencing a major surge in temperature due to the global climate crisis. Somotex’s climate-friendly air conditioners are a sustainable way to stay cool without a severe environmental impact.
