Social Media Critic Held in Custody Over Alleged Threats Against President’s Son Seyi, Tinubu, IGP

A federal judge in Abuja has denied an immediate bail request for social media critic and nurse Olamide Thomas, who faces cybercrime charges for allegedly making threatening statements against prominent Nigerian figures, including President Tinubu’s son.

Judge Emeka Nwite rejected the defense’s verbal bail application, requiring instead a formal written submission. Thomas, who pleaded not guilty to three counts of cyberbullying, allegedly posted a video containing death threats against Seyi Tinubu, Police Inspector General Kayode Egbetokun, and the children of police spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi.

The case stems from Thomas’s arrest in Lagos on December 13, following a controversial video she posted after her previous detention during an #EndSARS anniversary protest at the Lekki tollgate on October 20. After her arrest, she was transferred to Abuja for prosecution.

Prosecutors are pursuing charges under the Cybercrimes Act of 2024, which criminalizes online communications that cause fear or apprehension of harm. The trial is scheduled to commence on December 30.
