Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday unveiled three new train sets for the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line to boost urban transportation and expand the state’s rail infrastructure capacity.
The new train sets, each consisting of four cars, were introduced at a formal ceremony held at the National Theatre Station.
According to the governor, the addition effectively doubles the current passenger-carrying capacity of the Blue Line, significantly enhancing the efficiency, reliability, and frequency of train operations.
“With this addition, we are doubling our current passenger capacity on the Blue Line,” Governor Sanwo-Olu stated on his official X (formerly Twitter) account. “This will directly improve the commute for thousands of Lagosians, reducing wait times, speeding up journeys, and making the system more reliable overall. Our goal is to have trains arriving every 10 minutes.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu also acknowledged the crucial role of the Federal Government and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in supporting the rail transport initiative. “I’m deeply grateful to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government for their strong support. From procurement to delivery, their backing made this possible,” he said.
The LRMT Blue Line, which currently runs from Marina to Mile 2, is one of the major rail infrastructure projects under the Lagos State Strategic Transport Master Plan aimed at decongesting road traffic and improving mobility across the metropolis. Construction of Phase 2 of the Blue Line, extending the corridor from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, is reportedly progressing steadily.
In addition to the Blue Line upgrades, Governor Sanwo-Olu disclosed that Lagos is expecting the arrival of new train sets for the Red Line before the end of the year. The Red Line, which runs from Agbado to Marina, is expected to carry twice the capacity of the Blue Line and is projected to further ease urban transport bottlenecks across the city.
The governor reiterated that these developments are part of a broader strategy to transform Lagos into a modern megacity with world-class infrastructure.
“We’re building infrastructure and a better future for urban mobility in Lagos. And we’re just getting started,” he said.
The LRMT project is a public infrastructure investment initiative under the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), with the aim of integrating rail, road, and water transport systems for sustainable citywide connectivity.
The transport overhaul is expected to support economic growth, reduce travel time, and boost productivity across Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial nerve center.
