Regina Daniels’ mother loses AGN presidential election to Abubakar Yakubu

Abubakar Yakubu has been elected as the new president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), narrowly defeating veteran actress Rita Daniels, Regina Daniels‘ mother in a tense election.

The vote took place on Saturday during the guild’s annual general meeting in Benin City, Edo State, with Yakubu securing 116 votes against Daniels’ 113.

Three votes were declared invalid, highlighting how closely contested the race was.

Yakubu succeeds Emeka Rollas, marking a historic moment for the guild. He is the first AGN president from northern Nigeria since the guild’s formal registration in 1998.

Over the years, Yakubu has served in several key administrative roles, including national secretary (2019–2025), national vice president, national treasurer, and public relations officer, bringing a wealth of experience to the top position.

A graduate of Dramatic Arts from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, the Kaduna-born actor boasts over 25 years in the entertainment industry, spanning television, film, and stage productions.

His election reflects both his longstanding dedication to the guild and the confidence members have in his leadership.

Rita Daniels, mother of popular actress Regina Daniels, ran on a platform focused on member protection and empowerment.

Her campaign, however, faced controversy after outgoing president Rollas advised her to prioritise family responsibilities over the presidency, sparking debates among members and fans alike.

In other results from the AGM, Ifeoma Okeke was elected as the new national secretary, adding fresh energy to the guild’s leadership team.

Past AGN presidents include notable figures such as Larry Williams, Emma Ogugua, Zack Orji, Ejike Asiegbu, Segun Arinze, and Ibinabo Fiberesima.
