Political Tensions in Rivers: Fubara Meets President Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday held confidential discussions with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The meeting was also attended by Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru.

The engagement comes amid rising political tensions in Rivers State and questions surrounding Fubara’s position within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Fubara arrived at the State House around 5:01 pm and was received by the Presidential Protocol Liaison Officer. The session lasted approximately 45 minutes and was held entirely behind closed doors, with no official details on the agenda or outcomes disclosed.

Governor Nwifuru also held a private meeting earlier, which reportedly focused on regional priorities such as infrastructure and security in the South-East.

The timing of Fubara’s visit follows the defection of 17 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This shift has left Fubara with only three PDP-aligned supporters in the state legislature, dramatically altering the political landscape.
