The faction aligned with Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has launched a new internal restructuring drive aimed at resetting troubled state chapters and paving the way for fresh congresses and a national convention.
At a meeting of the factional Board of Trustees (BoT) held at Wike’s Life Camp residence in Abuja, Chairman of the group, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, said the move was part of a deliberate effort to “rebuild the PDP from within” and restore public confidence in its internal democratic processes.
Ohuabunwa revealed that the faction has already begun reorganising affected state chapters through the constitution of “credible and reform-driven” caretaker committees. These steps, he said, would “prepare the ground for transparent congresses and a subsequent convention process.”
He stressed that the reforms were necessary to rebuild trust, strengthen party structures and uphold the PDP’s reputation as a party defined by fairness and inclusiveness.
Declaring full support for the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led National Working Committee (NWC), Ohuabunwa said the faction would work closely with the national leadership to ensure due process prevails.
“We are going to work with this NWC, encourage them and support them to ensure that the right things are done in line with the law and the principles of our great party,” he said.
He emphasised that the BoT must reclaim its constitutional role as the stabilising organ of the PDP, describing the board as the “conscience and moral compass” of the party. According to him, its responsibility is to safeguard the party’s soul and steer it away from divisive tendencies.
“In this defining moment, we must rise above sentiments and act with unity,” he said, urging members to commit to the restructuring agenda.
Ohuabunwa expressed confidence that the PDP would emerge stronger after the ongoing reforms, saying the priority was to deepen cohesion and reassert the party’s leadership credentials ahead of future elections.
He thanked members for attending the meeting despite short notice and travel delays, expressing optimism that the deliberations would lay the foundation for a more stable and revitalised PDP.
Those present included factional National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, former Abia State governor Okezie Ikpeazu, former deputy governors including Dr Philip Salawu of Kogi State, and several other party chieftains.
