The 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his commitment to serve only one four-year term if elected president, insisting that impactful leadership does not require an extended stay in office.
Writing on his X handle on Sunday, Obi stressed that history has shown purposeful service, not longevity, defines true statesmanship.
He cited global and African figures such as Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, and Nelson Mandela, noting their enduring legacies despite serving for short periods.
“Indeed, history shows that the longer many African leaders remain in power, the more likely they are to be corrupted by it,” Obi said. “It is purposeful, accountable service – however brief – that defines true statesmanship. My vow to serve only one term of four years is sacrosanct.”
The Labour Party candidate said he understood the scepticism of Nigerians, many of whom doubt political promises due to past disappointments.
He referenced comments suggesting his one-term pledge was unrealistic with some even questioning his mental fitness.
“But they forget, or perhaps choose to ignore, that Peter Obi is not cut from that cloth. I have a verifiable track record that speaks louder than speculation. In my political life, my word is my bond,” he stated.
Obi pointed to his tenure as Governor of Anambra State, where he fulfilled commitments to improve education and healthcare, expand rural infrastructure through road construction, and ensure prudent management of public funds.
“My vow to serve only one term of four years is a solemn commitment, rooted in my conviction that purposeful, transparent leadership does not require an eternity,” he said. “Forty-eight months is enough for any leader who is focused and prepared to make a meaningful difference.”
Outlining his priorities, Obi said his administration would focus on sanitising the governance system, tackling insecurity through accountable use of national resources, prioritising education and healthcare, driving poverty alleviation, and supporting small businesses as engines of growth.
He emphasized a vision to transform Nigeria from a consuming economy into a productive nation driven by agriculture, technology, and manufacturing.
“These are not utopian dreams. They are realistic, actionable goals achievable within four years,” Obi added. “We must rebuild trust in our country. I have done it before, and I will not betray that trust under any circumstances.”
