Nigeria Celebrates D’Tigress After Historic Fifth Consecutive AfroBasket Triumph

Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has secured a record-breaking fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title after defeating Mali 78–64 in a thrilling final on Sunday night at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The victory marks Nigeria’s seventh African championship overall, reinforcing its dominance in continental women’s basketball and earning global recognition for the team.

In a congratulatory message issued by his Spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, President Bola Tinubu commended the players for their exceptional performance, describing the triumph as a source of pride for the nation.

“Your superb performance throughout the competition has made Nigeria proud,” the president said. “Like the Super Falcons, you have inspired our young ladies. You embodied the indomitable Nigerian spirit, the power of unity, and the rewards of hard work.”

Despite trailing in the first quarter, D’Tigress showcased resilience and tactical discipline under the leadership of Head Coach Rena Wakama, who guided the team to continental glory.

President Tinubu praised Wakama and her technical crew for their outstanding leadership and strategic execution.

The president also acknowledged the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) for its consistent support in developing the sport and ensuring D’Tigress maintained its winning form.

“By winning the AfroBasket trophy for a record fifth consecutive time, you have written your names in history and shown the world what to expect out of Africa,” Tinubu stated.

He assured the players of the Federal Government’s continued support as they prepare for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournaments scheduled for March 2026.

“The government and the people of Nigeria celebrate you and assure you of our continued support as you prepare for the next stage,” the president said, adding that he looked forward to receiving the victorious team and the trophy in Abuja.

The win not only cements Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s basketball but also positions D’Tigress as a formidable contender on the global stage ahead of next year’s World Cup qualifiers.
