Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa has urged journalists across the country to safeguard the credibility and integrity of the media profession.
She made the call on Friday while speaking at the 15th anniversary and award night of Nigerian NewsDirect, where she also applauded the newspaper’s remarkable growth and staying power.
Dabiri-Erewa praised the Publisher for his dedication to the craft, describing him as “a very aggressive marketer and an intelligent media person.”
She noted that NewsDirect’s ability to thrive even after the death of its founder reflects strong leadership and resilience. According to her, the newspaper’s journey offers valuable lessons on preserving legacy at a time when many media houses are collapsing.
Turning to the broader media landscape, she expressed worry over declining professional standards. She reminded journalists of their duty to protect press freedom by consistently asking tough questions, holding leaders accountable and upholding ethical values. “We must protect the profession,” she said, stressing that journalists have a responsibility to maintain the dignity of the newsroom.
Dabiri-Erewa also appealed for unity and urged Nigerians to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, noting that some of its policies may be difficult but are designed to improve citizens’ welfare.
She emphasised the need for responsible criticism and balanced reporting as crucial tools for nation-building.
She rounded off her remarks with warm congratulations to Matthew, expressing confidence that NewsDirect will continue to break new grounds for decades to come.
“I hope to see NewsDirect celebrate its 100th anniversary,” she said with a smile, adding that she was simply “a good speaking professional.”
She thanked the audience and reaffirmed her commitment to supporting the media industry.
