They demanded that the president revoke the decree and warned him that he would have to face them in court if he didn’t if he didn’t within 72 hours.

The CSOs made the call in a letter that was signed by their leaders, including Abubakar Ibrahim, Secretary of the Coalition of Civil Society Groups; Olumide Kingsley Egbeola, President of the First Alliance Group; Akindele Oluwafemi, Convener of the Centre for Public Accountability; Nelson Osaize, President of the African Leadership Strategy & Transparency Development Initiative; and Ibrahim Sule, President of the Northern Nigeria Good Governance Forum.

The Coalition claimed that Buhari’s order to bypass the Senate’s confirmation of the board and MD of NEDC was a deliberate affront to the Constitution and undermined the process of appointing public office holders, so it declared it to be unconstitutional in the address read during a press conference held in Abuja.

“Our attention has been drawn to the recent unconstitutional role played by Mr. President in the recent appointment he did barely a few days to handover,” the Coalition declared. We question why he is in such a rush to confirm a nomination he made without the Senate’s approval, which is required by Section 147 of the Constitution, which states that such nominations made by the President but not ratified by the Senate shall be void and unenforceable.

“This violation of constitutional rights won’t stand. We vehemently denounce the outgoing president’s behavior. The behavior is abhorrent and wholly unacceptable. We state that the newly appointed board must receive approval from the Nigerian Senate before they can work again. As a result, we implore President Buhari to reverse his earlier decision ordering them to resume work without Senate approval and to allow a senior commission official to lead while the newly appointed managing director, chief executive officer, and other board members are confirmed.
