A man identified as Enediong Bassey, has been arrested by operatives of the Anambra State Police Command for hiding a gun in a bag of rice.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.
He noted that the 25 year old suspect who hails from Akwa Ibom State, was arrested after he confessed to being a member of a local vigilante group.
SP Ikenga added that the suspect was about to escape with the gun to join his criminal gang, for armed robbery and other unpatriotic activities.
He further revealed that the Commissioner of Police has also ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the anti-robbery squad of the command for comprehensive investigations.
He therefore reiterated the commissioner’s call for the profiling of security operatives.
The statement reads in part, “Enediong Bassey ‘M’ 25yrs a native of Ikono LGA of Akwa Ibom State was arrested after he confessed to being a member of a local vigilante group.
“Given the above and following other complaints and unprofessional conduct by some security outfits and vigilante members, the Commissioner Of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam in line with the principles of Community Policing reiterates the calls for profiling of security operatives assisting the Police and other security agencies on anti-crime operations to improve safety in the State.”
