The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the death of a 35-year-old zoo worker, Babaji Daule, who was killed by a lion at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta on Saturday.
According to the police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, the tragic incident occurred when the Bauchi State-born lion handler reportedly failed to secure the locks and barricade the lion’s enclosure before approaching to feed the animal.
This lapse allowed the lion to escape, attacking Daule and inflicting fatal injuries on his neck. Efforts to rescue the handler were unsuccessful, and his body was later taken to the mortuary at Ijaye General Hospital.
The lion was eventually shot by zoo authorities to release its grip on the victim.
