Lagos State Targets Service Expansion as Bus Ridership Crosses 60 Million Mark

The Lagos State Government has confirmed that over 60 million passengers have used its state-owned bus transport system since 2019.

Commissioner for Transportation Oluwaseun Osiyemi disclosed the figure during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing in Alausa.

He described the achievement as a sign of public trust in state-run mobility solutions and a validation of ongoing reforms in the transport sector.

To meet rising demand and improve service coverage, the state government is set to roll out additional buses and complete the construction of Quality Bus Corridors across key transit routes. These corridors are designed to enhance travel speed, reduce congestion, and provide a more structured urban commute.

Osiyemi also confirmed the commissioning of the Abule-Egba Bus Terminal and declared that the facility is expected to serve as a major hub to manage higher passenger volumes and streamline operational logistics for buses operating along that axis.

Since the release of the Lagos State Transport Policy in May 2024, the government has intensified efforts to build a transport ecosystem that supports sustainability, affordability, and long-term infrastructure growth.

The policy includes goals for cleaner vehicles, digital integration, and improved access for underserved communities.

The state’s transport system continues to face pressure from rapid population growth, rising fuel costs, and limited alternatives to road-based mobility.

Officials say improving the state-run fleet is critical to maintaining affordability and curbing overreliance on informal transport operators.

In the coming months, Lagos will deploy more high-capacity buses and introduce new service points in underserved locations.

The state is also exploring financing options to support fleet acquisition and corridor development under public-private partnerships.

With ridership rising and infrastructure expansion underway, the government said it remains committed to reducing travel time, improving safety standards, and delivering efficient public transportation to all residents of Lagos.
