In a dramatic turn of events at the Lagos State House of Assembly, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa was impeached on Monday by members of the House over alleged statutory and financial violations. His deputy, Lasbat Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency 1, has been elevated to the position of Speaker.
The impeachment occurred while Obasa was reportedly in Atlanta, coming shortly after revelations of a N43.5 billion expenditure allegedly approved for backup vehicles for lawmakers, among other controversial financial decisions.
Obasa, 52, who had served as Speaker since June 8, 2015, has faced multiple allegations of financial impropriety throughout his tenure. Previously, he was investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following media reports of alleged mismanagement of public funds, including accusations of diverting state funds to personal businesses and bank accounts. Though questioned by the EFCC in 2020, no formal charges were filed.
The new Speaker, Lasbat Meranda, who previously served as the House’s chief whip, takes the helm at a crucial moment for the Lagos State legislature. Her appointment marks a significant shift in the Assembly’s leadership amid growing concerns over financial transparency and accountability.
This development represents one of the most significant political changes in the Lagos State House of Assembly in recent years, potentially signaling a new direction in the state’s legislative leadership.
