KIITAN FOUNDATION: Ending Period Poverty in Nigeria
Kiitan Foundation is an incredible organization making sure a period isn’t a full stop in a girl’s life. Many girls and young women in disadvantaged communities can not afford sanitary products, unfortunately, this is the reality for a lot of women and girls all over Africa. While data about the issue, and particularly how it impacts girls in Africa, is generally lacking, one 2016 UNESCO report estimated that 1 in 10 girls in sub-Sarahan Africa miss school during their period — by some estimates, this means a girl can miss up to 20% of a school year.
Because of this, their performance in school suffers, with some girls even dropping out of school completely, lowering their chances to increase their earnings and standard of living, and affecting their entire future. To bridge this gap, Kiitan foundation included a program to cushion the effects on girls and young women in the society.
Kiitan foundation was founded in 2019, with the sole aim of rendering selfless service to mankind.
One of the Foundation’s causes that strikes the most is “The girl Child and the Pad” program. An intiative that has been in effect since 2021. Providing free sanitary pads and disposable pants for young girls and women in low income communities, educating women and girls on good menstrual hygiene management while organising and planning campaigns to advocate for better SRHR education in Africa.. The foundation also has medical personnel at hand during the girl child and the pad program to counsel and respond to questions from the beneficiaries.
Kiitan Foundation also creates and distributes “Things you need to know on Menstrual hygiene” an informational pamphlet that explains menstrual periods in an engaging and accessible manner. The pamphlet is also translated to Yoruba to increase accessibility at the rural level.
Kiitan Foundation has provided menstrual pads and other sanitary products to thousands of school going girls and young women in Ibadan and some communities in other states.
