Her resignation was conveyed in a letter dated May 31 and addressed to the Ogun State APC Chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi. The development comes months after she participated in the race for the party’s governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.
The United States-based epidemiologist expressed dissatisfaction with the process that led to the emergence of Senator Solomon Adeola as the APC’s consensus governorship candidate, arguing that the procedure did not align with the party’s established guidelines.
Obasanjo stated that while she had agreed to support any candidate produced through a consensus arrangement, she was not consulted before Adeola was announced as the preferred candidate. She further alleged that some of her supporters were denied entry to the venue where the candidate was unveiled and were subjected to intimidation.
Despite her concerns, she said she chose to accept the outcome for the sake of party unity and immediately congratulated Adeola following his emergence.
According to her, the senator later reached out and sought a meeting with her supporters. During the meeting, three requests were presented, and he assured them that a response would be provided within a week. However, she noted that more than two months later, no response had been received.
Obasanjo maintained that the incident was part of a broader pattern of disregard toward her within the party.
She stated, “I agreed to support whichever candidate emerged through a consensus process, but I was not consulted before Senator Adeola was presented as the consensus candidate. Some of my supporters were denied access to the venue and intimidated. Nevertheless, I accepted the outcome in the interest of party unity and publicly congratulated Senator Adeola that same night.
“Following his emergence, Senator Adeola requested a meeting with my supporters. During that meeting, three requests were made and he promised to respond within one week. More than two months later, no response has been received.
“The treatment I have received since then has reflected a consistent pattern of rejection and disrespect. When disrespect is the only dish served, then one should leave the table. I am therefore leaving the APC table where I am not welcomed.”
While announcing her departure, the former lawmaker expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, the Ogun APC chairman, Chief Sanusi, and the Ogun Central Senatorial leadership under Chief Soremi for the support and courtesy extended to her during her time in the party.
Obasanjo re-entered active politics earlier this year after registering as an APC member in Ward 11, Ibogun, in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State.
She previously served as Ogun State Commissioner for Health between 2003 and 2007 before representing Ogun Central in the Senate from 2007 to 2011.
Following an unsuccessful bid for a second term in 2011, she relocated to the United States and remained largely absent from partisan politics until late 2025, when campaign billboards bearing her image appeared across Abeokuta, fueling speculation about a return to the political scene ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
She later formally declared her ambition to contest the Ogun governorship on the APC platform before eventually announcing her resignation from the party.
