On Monday, the Judges at the Appeal Court rejected the application filed by Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar for the live telecast of court proceedings. The Judges said that the live streaming is novel and not deeply rooted in the constitution, and that as a result of that, they won’t grant the prayers of Peter Obi and Atiku.

Reacting to this, the former Minister of Justice, Michael Aondoakaa has said that the Judges at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal rejected the application for live broadcast of court proceedings so as to avoid issues that may arise if they grant such permission. He said he does not have any doubt in the credibility of the Judges, and that they took the right decision by rejecting the application, knowing fully well that we are in the era where fake news is circulated on social media.

In his words, he said:

Live broadcast is not a legal matter. I think they are (the Judges) going in the right direction. I think there is more wisdom to say let us allow people to enter the court room, but let us not allow live broadcast. To me, I don’t still see any doubt in the credibility of the Judges.”
