Sani Yerima, an ex-governor of Zamfara and Presidential hopeful, has strongly defended his decision to marry a 13-year-old girl during a recent appearance on Channels TV on Tuesday, May 10.

The marriage, which took place in 2009, drew widespread criticism, although the lawmaker says he did not break any laws.

“If I had done anything wrong, I would have been tried in court. NAPTIP wanted to try the case and they dropped the matter because I didn’t do anything wrong,”

He continued; “there is no law in Nigeria that determines when and how you get married. Muslims have Sharia, the Christians I don’t know what their doctrines say.”

From May 1999 to May 2007, Ahmed Rufai Sani Yerima served as Governor of Zamfara State in Nigeria, as well as Senator for Zamfara West and Deputy Minority Leader in the Senate. He belongs to the APC (All Progressives Congress).
