He spoke during events organised by the Nigerian Navy as part of activities marking its 70th anniversary, where he reflected on the role of the Armed Forces in sustaining Nigeria’s stability and unity.
Omatsola described the military as a key pillar of national cohesion, stressing that the country must not take its security institutions for granted.
“Today is a special day for the Navy. The Navy and the Armed Forces, I believe from my experiences, are the keystone to Nigeria’s unity,” he said.
Expressing concern over the nation’s direction, he warned that failure to act decisively could make the situation worse.
“Things are going very wrong in the country. If we are not careful, it will be worse,” he stated.
He urged the military, paramilitary bodies, and other security agencies to remain committed to their constitutional duties, noting that rising insecurity has increased public demand for stronger security presence across communities.
Omatsola attributed many of the country’s challenges to declining discipline, describing it as the foundation of leadership and national order.
“Discipline has always been missing. If I am not disciplined, I cannot discipline my wife, I cannot discipline my family,” he said.
He also cautioned against making laws or policies under fear, insisting that panic-driven decisions rarely produce lasting solutions.
“You cannot do anything through fear. If you make any law through fear, the law will not hold. You must not be afraid when you are making a law,” he added.
The former naval chief called on Nigerians to embrace discipline, patriotism, and collective responsibility to safeguard national unity and address security challenges.
The Nigerian Navy is currently celebrating its 70th anniversary with activities showcasing its contributions to maritime security and the defence of Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
