A European woman who has lived in Lagos for a year has gone viral after sharing five things that surprised her about life in Nigeria compared to her home country.
In a video circulating on social media, she highlighted the efficiency of Nigeria’s banking system as her biggest shock. According to her, instant transfers in Europe are uncommon, and transactions often take time to process, unlike in Nigeria where money moves within seconds.

Convenience of borrowing data
She also noted the convenience of borrowing mobile data, describing it as a feature she had never encountered before moving to Nigeria.
The third observation she shared was about her health. She explained that she frequently battled seasonal flu and viruses in Europe but has not experienced the same issues in Nigeria, though she warned that malaria remains a real risk.
Her fourth point focused on the environment. She expressed amazement at how Nigerian plants retain water during the dry season, maintaining their colour instead of turning yellow as they typically do in Europe.
Comparison between Nigerian men and Europeans
Her final observation, which sparked humorous reactions online, concerned public behaviour. She said that while European men usually try to discreetly urinate when pressed, some Nigerian men make little effort to hide and may even make eye contact during the act, which she found uncomfortable.
Her words …
“Living in Lagos for a year, here are the 5 things that surprised me.
Number one is the banking system and how fast it is. I never knew how backwards we are in Europe because it’s hard for European Unions to do instant transfers. If you do a bank transfer in Nigeria you receive it in seconds.
Number two is the fact that you can actually borrow data. If you run out of data and don’t have another source, you can actually borrow data.
Number three is that I don’t get sick in Nigeria. When I was in Europe I was suffering with some seasonal flus, viruses. But be careful of malaria.
Number four, during the dry season, the plants can somehow retain water so they don’t go yellow as it does in Europe.
Number five, in Europe when men get the the urge to ease themselves, they try to find a spot to do it in a way that is not just in your face. They try to hide. Nigerians don’t hide. They even look you in the face and try to make eye contact. I’m like eww.”
