FG urges Judiciary to fast-track terrorism and violent-crime trials

The Federal Government has called on the judiciary to accelerate the handling of terrorism and other serious criminal cases to strengthen national security efforts.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), made the appeal in Abuja on Monday at the ceremony marking the opening of the Court of Appeal’s 2025/2026 Legal Year.

Fagbemi said the nation’s security challenges, ranging from terrorism and insurgency to kidnapping, banditry and violent crime, require urgent and coordinated action across all sectors, including the justice system.

He stressed that swift and consistent adjudication would ensure accountability, dismantle impunity and reinforce public confidence in the rule of law.

The AGF added that the Federal Government is committed to prosecuting terrorism-related offences promptly, stating that timely trials complement ongoing military and intelligence operations.

Wike promises better welfare and infrastructure for judges

He also disclosed that more Federal High Court judges would be appointed to ease the burden on the courts and enhance the speed of justice delivery.

Also speaking at the event, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, assured judicial officers that improved accommodation and security measures were being prioritised.

He announced new housing projects for judges, perimeter fencing for the Supreme Court complex and several other infrastructure developments aimed at strengthening the judicial system.

Wike noted that better working and living conditions would help judges perform their duties more efficiently, adding that the Tinubu administration was committed to broad justice-sector reforms in the new legal year.
