The question of the FCT role in the presidential election and the obligatory nature of securing 25 percent of the votes cast has generated significant debate ever since only one candidate in the 2023 election managed to achieve this threshold.

During a program on Arise TV, renowned Nigerian journalist and media entrepreneur Kadaria Ahmed shared her perspective on the constitutional provisions regarding the FCT.

In her remarks, she asserted that it is a mandatory requirement to win 25 percent of the votes cast in the FCT in order to be successful in an election. Ahmed also highlighted the importance of attaining this threshold in the FCT, even if a presidential candidate secures 25 percent of the votes in 24 states.

During the program, she outlined the two conditions for victory: firstly, obtaining the highest number of votes, and secondly, winning 25 percent of the votes in at least two-thirds of Nigeria’s 36 states, including the FCT. Therefore, if a candidate manages to achieve 25 percent in 24 states but fails to meet the same requirement in the FCT, it poses a significant challenge.
