The Danish government has announced a commitment of 430 million kroner or €57.7 million toward a long-term scholarship initiative aimed at strengthening academic cooperation between Denmark and the African continent.
The programme will support 230 African students annually over the next eight years and includes full scholarships covering both tuition and living expenses.
Nigerian students are among those eligible to participate in the initiative, which forms a key component of Denmark’s newly unveiled Africa Strategy.
The programme is expected to enhance educational access for young Africans while reinforcing Denmark’s bilateral ties with the region.
According to the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the scholarship scheme will be administered by the Danida Fellowship Centre, a self-governing institution operating under the ministry.
The Danida Fellowship Centre is responsible for capacity development across Denmark’s development cooperation initiatives and will oversee the selection, administration, and monitoring of beneficiaries under the new programme.
In addition to academic funding, the scholarship offers access to the European Union’s Erasmus exchange programme.
This will allow recipients to gain broader academic exposure and cultural experiences across other European institutions during the course of their studies in Denmark.
The initiative is positioned as part of Denmark’s wider effort to collaborate with African nations on sustainable development, human capital investment, and inclusive growth.
By targeting skilled, high-potential individuals across the continent, Denmark aims to contribute to long-term socio-economic advancement in African partner countries while strengthening institutional partnerships.
In a related statement, the Danish government reiterated its commitment to development cooperation through targeted investments in education, innovation and knowledge transfer.
The scholarship programme aligns with the country’s broader foreign policy objectives of supporting inclusive, quality education in growth and developing economies.
Application details, including eligibility criteria, academic fields, and partnership universities, are expected to be published by the Danida Fellowship Centre in the coming weeks.
