Davido Says He Ran Away From Home Because He Was Tired Of Hiding His Passion For Music From His Dad

Popular singer, Davido, has recounted how he once ran away from home to pursue music.

Speaking to the press during a recent interview, the singer revealed that he was totally fed up with hiding his passion at the time, so he felt it was the right thing to do.

According to him, he left home to stay with a producer friend in London for six months, and unknown to him, his dad had launched a mega search in Nigeria that involved lots of immigration officers and soldiers.

After a while, Davido said he eventually returned to the country with the intention of staying at another friend’s place, only for him to land at the airport and see an army officer walk up to him to escort him outside.

The “Funds” crooner said that he was escorted to where his dad was waiting, but instead of getting the scolding he clearly deserved at the time, his father hugged him instead, because he just felt happy and relieved to see his son again.

Davido confessed that the lovely moment they shared gave him the courage to tell his father about his passion for singing, while making him understand that while he mainly wanted him to go to school, the only thing he wants to do with his life is make music.

“I thought I’d be scolded, But he was just happy to see me. That moment gave me the courage to tell him the truth: I didn’t want school — I just wanted to do music and make it,” he said.

David Adeleke disclosed that he once lived alone with his dad in his 16-bedroom mansion because his siblings were abroad and his mother had died, so he spent a lot of his alone time recording music and smoking. The Afrobeats legend added that he even set up a studio inside the huge mansion he lived in with his dad, and his old man never found out.

Recall that Davido recently released his much-anticipated 5th album, “5ive,” on April 18, 2025. The album features 17 songs and several guest appearances from musicians all over the world.

With collaborations with fellow Afrobeats stars like Omah Lay and Victony, Nigerians can expect to be served the kind of sound they have always appreciated OBO for, especially after the success of “Funds,” a soothing Nigerian tune featuring OdumoduBlvck and Chike that constantly gets you to the dance floor whenever it comes on.

The project also features international acts like Jamaica’s YG Marley, who did his thing on “Awuke,” the very first single of the album that 30BG gang cannot get enough of. Other Caribbean singers on the album are the super-talented Shensea and 450.
