Justina’s demise

Justina, a 20-year-old 300-level Biochemistry student, was reported missing after visiting Damian’s apartment in Ozuoba in late October 2023. The subsequent investigation led to the discovery of her body which was already dismembered and the arrest of Damian, sparking nationwide concern and calls for justice.

After a prolonged legal process involving multiple hearings and witness testimonies, the court reached its conclusion today. Damian Okoligwe received the maximum sentence permitted under the law.

Damian sentenced to hanging

The judge directed that Okoligwe should be hanged until death.

The judgment marks the end of a two-year pursuit of justice for Justina and her family.

Speaking after the ruling, the lead prosecutor, Charles Mbaba, welcomed the court’s decision, noting that it brings a sense of closure to the family of the late Justina Otuene.

He added that the verdict should serve as a strong reminder to young people that taking harmful shortcuts in the pursuit of success only leads to devastating consequences.

He said, “Justice has been done and is seen and felt to be done in respect of Justina Otuene. Justina was the only daughter of her parents but was gruesomely murdered by Damian Okoligwe in circumstances suggestive of ritual intentions.

“Today, the court has pronounced him guilty of the murder of Justina Otuene. We hope and believe that with this judgment, the soul of Justina can now have a peaceful repose. I also believe that this judgment will serve as a deterrent to youths who believe shortcuts in life are the only means to get rich quick.”
