Buhari Asks Senate To Approve Payments Of $556m, £98m, N226bn Judgment Debts

President Muhammadu Buhari has sought the approval of the Senate over a request to pay different sums as judgment debts.

According to the Dailytrust paper, the amounts which are $566,754,584, £98,526,012 and N226 billion — are said to be owed by the federal government.

At the plenary meeting on Wednesday, Senate President Ahmad Lawan read the president’s letter of request.

Recall that the Ministry of Justice was charged by the Office of the Auditor-General (OAGF) of not following the proper procedures when allocating cash for judgement debts.

According to the OAGF report, N10.4 billion was set aside as judgement debts between 2017 and 2018, and the money was squandered without the need for a committee.

According to the paper, the ministry last convened a committee like this in 2013.

Abubakar Malami, who has served as the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice since 2015, was named indicted by the report.

The senate public accounts committee, which examined the OAGF report, was presided over by senator Matthew Uhroghide, who represents Edo South.

According to the research, the federal government will lose money set aside to cover judgement debts if the practise is permitted to continue.

The Justice Ministry should halt disbursing the monies, and a committee should be immediately established for that reason, the Senate agreed with the OAGF.
