A coup attempt is reportedly unfolding in Cotonou after an early-morning attack on the residence of President Patrice Talon in the Le Guézo area on Sunday, December 7, 2025.
Beninese outlet TchadOne reports that the assault was carried out by soldiers led by Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri, who later appeared on national television, said to be under military control, proclaiming himself “chairman of the military re-establishment committee.”
Tension remains high across Cotonou as witnesses report heavy troop presence around strategic locations, including government facilities and major roadways.
As of now, neither President Talon nor any member of his administration has issued an official statement on the attack or the unfolding situation.
The attempted power grab adds to concerns over rising political volatility in West Africa, a region that has seen multiple military takeovers in recent years.
TchadOne says continuous updates will be provided as events in Benin develop.
